Finding positivity through plants

A recent article in the Times associated gardening with ‘the highest feeling of exhilaration’ and discussed the many benefits of growing vegetables and flowers on your frame of mind. As we adapt to this new challenging reality, it is important now, more than ever, to look after your mental and physical health in these troubling times. Trying to achieve this whilst being mainly indoors can seem like a daunting task, however, below are a few things you can do to try and lift your spirits both inside your home and on your daily trip outside.

If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, get in it and start showing it some love, armed with a pair of gardening gloves and a cup of tea. Have a look at our easy plants for beginners, or if you’re feeling bold why not order a selection of seedlings that you have always wanted to try and get planting. Growing a herb patch or creating varied flower beds is a satisfying and joyous task.

Nows the time to get that patch started!

If you don’t have a garden, why not incorporate some plants into your daily walk or jog by peeking into people’s front gardens or seeing what people are growing in their window boxes. This is a great way to get inspiration for what you might want to buy and can offer a cheering sight as the daffodils start to bloom. This is getting the pleasure out of gardening with none of the hard work!!

A fun little hack to do if you want to grow some herbs or plants indoors on a windowsill is to use an old tea container as the pot. All you need is to fill it up with soil and pop your pre-rooted herbs in, such as rosemary and keep in a sunny spot. This can also be done in egg cartons, check out our instagram story called ‘Grow your own’ to see how! A way to spruce up any indoor or outdoor pots is to paint them in bright fun colours  – can be done on both pottery ones and plastic if you have the right paint.

If you are unable to leave your home, try buying some indoor plants that are great at removing toxins from the air, making the atmosphere in which you live cleaner and calmer. Below are some indoor houseplants and plants that are renowned for removing toxins from the air.

Ficus Allii

– Removes chemical vapours from the air, this is not only great for cleansing the atmosphere but also is a tough houseplant. Not sensitive to light or watering.

Corn plant/Dracaena fragans ‘Massangeana’

– Looks like a tree and absorbs chemicals toxins from the air indoors – what could be a better duo to bring nature into your home!

Gerbera

–   Removes benzene from the air and produces oxygen at night, maybe one to keep in your bedroom to aid a restful nights sleep.

Would look lovely in a pretty vase

We hope that some of these things mentioned above help with putting a pep back in your step!
