5 Sustainable Ways To Spruce Up Your Home

I think we can agree that home and our interiors have become all the more important in the last year. Spending so much time inside has placed huge importance on how our spaces makes us feel. Our homes should make us feel happy and safe as places that we are all living and working in.

A space needs to let you feel like yourself…if that is through colour, pictures, plants or furniture, laying your stamp on a place is what makes home, home…and I don’t know about you, but I have been itching to redecorate since lockdown 3.0 arrived. Using colours and paint is a wonderful way to add some some joy into your home.

This is why we are so thrilled to be partnering up with the Cornish Milk Mineral Paint. A small independent business started by Reece and Joe, two former furniture painters. Their unique formula and gorgeous colours are all about reflecting the beauty of Cornwall, and they have made sure there is something for everyone.  Their paint colours really do channel the essence of Cornwall, like ‘Lobster’ to get you fired up or mellow ‘Kelp’ and my personal favourite ‘Blue Lobster’ (I have an unhealthy obsession with deep blues at the moment), these gorgeous colours have got you covered.

Colour

How does one create a warm and inviting interior space? Colours are a great start….no doubt you have fallen victim to the enticing dark greens and blues plastering instagram of late.

Different colours can create different vibes and energy. Reds, yellows and oranges are all long-wave colours and are stimulating, whilst blues and greens are soothing, so choosing the right colour is a really personal way to create your perfect space!

Painting one wall in a room is a good entry level of introducing colour into your home without committing fully. A statement wall is a fun way to also tie in aspects of the room…. The kelp green would look fabulous with our plant this month, creating a calming green oasis.

Up-cycling

Upcycling is cost effective and sustainable way of breathing new life into old furniture. Who doesn’t have a chest of draws that’s looking a bit tired, a plain old terracotta planter, or your WFH desk that could do with a spruce up? Well what are you waiting for? Not only is it a great weekend activity that the whole family can get involved with but it will add a novel element to your room and may even breathe a new lease of life into YOU!

Cornish Milk mineral paint is perfectly formulated for painting onto furniture; so don’t be afraid to go for it!

Naturalise Your Home

Plants are really important in creating the right energy for your home, connecting the inside with the nature. The biologist E. O. Wilson coined the term biophilia to describe the need for humans to seek out nature, and especially with current events, bringing plants inside has become a really great way to feel connected and getting all the benefits of nature to your mental health, in the comfort into your home!

Help make your plants the star of the show by picking the perfect colour to help compliment. Sea pink with a pop of green is a perfect combination.

There are less obvious aspects of biophilia that can help us to feel more connected to nature. Organic materials like wooden flooring and furniture, along with natural paint colours, rather than plastic or laminate, helps to create a feeling of being grounded in your environment.

Nature is constantly changing and it is possibly to recreate that at home, combining lighting and the movement of the sun throughout the day can make your home feel alive. A combination of dark cosy and spaces and light sun-spots mean that your home can transform throughout the day.

Keep It Green

Reducing air pollution inside your home is also very important…we take around 20,000 breaths per day, so you may as well make sure you are breathing in high quality air. Here are four quick ways you can reduce air pollution at home:

  • Eco-friendly cleaning products
  • Use an air purifier
  • Use candles free of chemicals (beeswax, vegetable and soy candles will do!)
  • Open your windows more often – 10/15 mins a day will do!
  • Use eco-friendly paint (Our friends at Cornish Milk have got you covered)

Cornish Mineral Milk Paint use only natural and sustainable ingredients, meaning that alongside your green friends, the air quality in your home will be much improved creating the perfect environment to chill out in.
