Plants: 3 Marvellously Planty Products

Did you know over 90% of the worlds food production is sourced from only 3 different crops? And that some of your everyday household items come from plants?

As we head towards an increasingly plant based society, I think its important to remember that behind some of our favourite products lie some very real and very wonderful plants.

Check out our latest blog on 3 things that are easy to forget come from our green friends.

PASTA

Who doesn’t love a plate of pasta? With its extraordinary breadth of shapes and styles, it really is the gift that keeps on giving.

Maybe it’s just me, but its easy to forget when your looking at your box of penne, that the start of its journey has been as small as a grain of wheat. This is then milled and combined with egg and water to make the golden good stuff.

The BBC definitely took this to the next level with their hilarious April fools panorama on the spaghetti harvest in Ticino.

PYJAMAS

Cotton pyjamas are a go to for something both cosy in winter and cool in summer. It’s easy to forget though that cotton starts of as a plant. Gossypium is the genus of cotton plant, and it is a pretty flowering perennial bush. It is then milled to make all manner of clothes, including good ol’ PJs.

LOOFAHS

The old school loofas are made from the Luffa genus, a family of vines. The fruit that grows on a tree is extremely fibrous and looks like a huge cucumber. This is then dried and everything else is removed, leaving the fibrous skeleton. This is then used as a loofah in the shower to exfoliate your skin!

With so much of us dependent on plants, now more than ever its important to support business that are ethically and sustainably producing their products. Plants give us so much, so we need to make sure we look after them!

Can you guess which one of these three will be included in our La Dolce Vita Mind, Body and Soil box?

We are bringing the holidays to you with our next box and you can sign up below with no payment taken until delivery day.
